what we do
Health communication is "the study of how health information is generated and disseminated and how that information affects individuals, community groups, institutions and public policy" (as stated by the Harvard School of Public Health). The mission of the PHCL is to help people communicate about health to improve public health.

The PHCL is led by Jennifer Manganello, a Professor at the University at Albany, SUNY.

We conduct research and practice based work to:
  • analyze messages about health in the media
  • study the effects of media messages and technology on health
  • create programs and materials to help people and health organizations become more health literate
  • develop new ways to measure media use and health literacy
  • help organizations with material design
  • identify resources for health professionals and the public
